WILL & INVENTORY OF JOHN BARBER, 1778, SUSSEX

ENGROSSED AND PROBATED

RECORDED IN BOOK OF WILLS No. 18 Page 674

In the name of God Amen, I John Barber of Sussex County and Township of Greenwich and Province of New Jersey (Esq.).  Being low in state but of perfect mind and memory, make this my last will and testament.

 

First I recommend my soul to God that gave it.  And my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner, to the discretion of my friends, my estate and effects I bequeath in manner following,

 

First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Margaret one third of my personal estate during her natural life with the use of one room in my dwelling / house to be furnished, as she shall requess (request?).  Over and above the one third of my personal estate, and sufficient fuel (?) for the sd. (said) room as long as she shall continue in it. 

Second, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Ennis the sum of fifty pounds prech (?), to be paid unto her by my two sons Phineas and Jessey on and before the first day of March next entering the date here of. 

Thirdly, I give and bequeath unto my beloved two sons Phineas and Jessey, all my lands and real estate to be equally divided between them, and I do hereby constitute (?) and appoint my good friends James Davison and Col. Mathias Shipman my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament, as witness my hand and seal this thirteenth day of December in the year of our lord: One thousand Seven hundred and Seventy Seven.

Ludlum Salmon & Mathias Shipman two of the witnesses to the written will, being duly sworn on the holy Evangelist of almighty God.  Did so orally depose that they saw John Barber, Esq. the testator herein named, sign & seal the same & heard him publicly pronounce and declare this written instrument to be his last will & testament & that at the doing thereof the (dec.) testator was of sound & disposing mind & memory as far these deponents know & as they verily believe, and that Joseph Treat the other subscribing witness was present & signed his name as a witness to sd. will together with those deponents in the presence of the said testator.

Mathias Shipman, _____Esq. with written testament named, being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist Of almighty God, did depose that the written last instrument contains the true last Will and Testament of John Barber, Esq. the testator therein named so far as they know & they verily believe and that they will well truly perform the same first paying the debt of _____sd. decd. & then the legacies in the testament specified so far as the goods, chattels, & credits of the sd. decd. can hereunto ____ & that they will make & exibit unto the Prerogative office a ____ true & perfect inventory of all & singular, the goods, chattels, & credits of the dec. that have ______ all come to their knowledge or possession or to the possession of any other person or persons for their use & rendor & ______ & true accot. (account) when thereunto carefully required.

A True Inventory of the Estate of the Deceased John Barber, Esq.

David Hayes, one of the appraisers of the written inventory being duly sworn did depose that the goods, chattels, & credits in the inventory set down & specific were by him appraised according to their just and true respective __iates & values according to the best of his judgement & understanding & that John Hendershot, the other appraiser whose name is herein to inscribed was present at the same time & consented in all things and the doings there of & that they appraised all things that were brought to them in view for appraisement of.
