Biography of Thomas Meek

Thomas Meek (person number 2 on the Meek Genealogy tree)

Thomas Meek was born 13 Jul 1841 at the Meek family home on Union Road northwest of Port Stanley in Southwold Township, Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.  He was the third of nine children of John Meek and Judith Lodge.  He lived his entire life in Southwold township.  On 22 Mar 1872 Thomas married Fanny Jane Barber of Southwold.  The ceremony was held “on Talbot Road” in Southwold (probably at the home of her parents).  The ceremony was conducted by Presbyterian minister George Sutherland.  Witnesses were Peter Sutherland and John Price.  Thomas was heir to his parent’s farm, and as his father was deceased, they set up home at the Meek homestead. The Meek homestead (Lot 12 Union Road ) was also known as “Hillside.”  Thomas and Fanny had 4 children:

Frederick Barber Meek (1873)
Judith Izant May Meek (1879)
Victor Maitland Meek (1884)
Thomas Harold Meek (1886)

Following traditions probably more from the Barber side of the family, all the children were very well educated scholastically as well as musically.

Thomas died of pneumonia on 22 Nov 1919 in Southwold Twp, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. The illness lasted 10 days.  It is likely his death was related to the 1918 influenza pandemic.  The funeral was on 25 Nov 1919; Service at Hillside and followed by burial at nearby Braynes Cemetery.  The service was conducted by the Anglican minister. The obituary states Thomas was widely known and highly regarded in the area.  Attempts to learn more about Thomas and Fanny have been fruitless.  They apparently were normal people that lived normal lives outside the limelight and did not leave a lot of tracks in the public records.
